The Dutch and lenses go back a long way. In 1608 Hans Lipperhey, a spectacle maker from Middelburg, applied for a patent on the very first telescope. Tips for cleaning your glasses
- •Use a microfibre cloth rather than your jumper or a tissue. Paper can leave fine scratches on coated lenses.
- •Dust or sand on your lenses? Rinse them briefly under lukewarm water before you start polishing.
- •Hand-wash your lens cloth now and then in lukewarm water with a little soap and let it air-dry. Avoid fabric softener.
- •Always keep your glasses in a case. It prevents scratches, bent arms and lost glasses.
