Peppermint
In the Netherlands, a peppermint is never far away. You'll find one at the till, next to your coffee and, in days gone by, in the church pew to get through a long sermon. Our Dutch peppermints come in cheerful souvenir tins featuring Van Gogh, Vermeer, Miffy, Delft Blue tulips or the famous kissing couple, as well as mini clogs and beer mugs filled with classic King mints. Small, affordable and long-lasting: the perfect little gift to take home or send to someone special.
Buy Dutch peppermints: a small gift with a fresh tradition
Few sweets are as Dutch as the humble peppermint. For generations, churchgoers slipped a roll into their pocket for the Sunday service, grandmothers always had a few in their handbag, and almost every shop counter still has a bowl of them waiting. The flavour comes from the peppermint plant, Mentha piperita. The second word means "peppered", but don't worry, it doesn't taste of pepper. It can be pleasantly sharp, though: the more peppermint oil, the fresher the bite.
De Holland Winkel has been selling Dutch souvenirs and treats since 2002. In this category you'll find peppermints you don't just eat, but keep. Once the mints are gone, the tin or clog stays on as a souvenir.
Which peppermints can you choose from?
Mint tins with Dutch masterpieces
A museum piece for your pocket. Choose from tins featuring Van Gogh's Sunflowers, Starry Night, Almond Blossom and Irises, Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring and The Milkmaid, Rembrandt's Night Watch, a Mondrian composition or a floral still life by De Heem.
Classic Dutch designs
Windmills, Delft Blue tulips, a heart of tulips and the well-known kissing couple in traditional costume. There are also city tins for Utrecht and Haarlem, and a colourful Holland tin.
Miffy peppermints
Dick Bruna's little rabbit from Utrecht on a peppermint tin: among the flowers, in a meadow with a windmill and a cow, or as a complete gift box. Lovely for children and for grown-ups who grew up with Miffy.
King mints in clogs and beer mugs
King peppermints have been a household name in the Netherlands for more than a century. We sell the tiny Baby King mints in a mini clog or mini beer mug, and King mints in a Delft Blue clog. A souvenir and a sweet in one.
Why peppermints make such a good souvenir
Peppermints are small, light and keep for a long time. Most tins cost just a few euros, so it's easy to bring something back for everyone. And because a tin is flat and sturdy, it travels happily in your suitcase or in a parcel to friends and family abroad.
