Jacob Marrell souvenirs: tulips from the Dutch Golden Age
In the 1630s the Netherlands was gripped by tulip fever. Rare bulbs changed hands for staggering sums, and growers and traders wanted to show off what they had to sell. To do so, they commissioned tulip books: collections of meticulously painted flowers that served as both sales catalogue and showpiece. Jacob Marrell (1614–1681) was one of the artists who filled these books. A tulip book by his hand is held in the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, and it is those very tulips you will find on the souvenirs in this category.
Marrell was born in Germany but spent many years working in Utrecht, where he became a respected painter of flower and fruit still lifes. He is thought to have studied under Jan Davidsz. de Heem, one of the great masters of the genre. He was also the stepfather and first teacher of Maria Sibylla Merian, who later became world-famous for her drawings of plants and insects. You will often see his name spelt Jacob or Jakob Marrel as well.
