Dutch decorative plates: the Old Masters at home

In the seventeenth century, wealthy Dutch households showed off their finest plates: on the wall, on the mantelpiece or on top of a cabinet. A beautiful plate was a status symbol and a conversation piece. Our decorative plates carry that tradition forward. They show works by painters who shaped Dutch art history, from Johannes Vermeer to Piet Mondrian, in a size that fits on a mantelpiece, a windowsill or a shelf in a display cabinet.

The metal plates are intended purely for decoration. They are far less fragile than ceramics, which makes a decorative plate one of the easiest Dutch art souvenirs to take home or post abroad. De Holland Winkel has been selling Dutch souvenirs and gifts since 2002.

Which decorative plates can you choose from?

Johannes Vermeer

Two of the best-known Dutch paintings side by side: The Milkmaid from the Rijksmuseum and Girl with a Pearl Earring from the Mauritshuis. Vermeer's soft light and deep blues and yellows really stand out on the larger 26 cm format.

Jacob Marrel's tulips

Jacob Marrel worked in Utrecht in the seventeenth century and painted tulips during the era of tulip mania, when a single bulb could cost more than a canal house. His tulips appear on small plates in red, yellow, green and pink, and on the larger Two Tulips plate.

Mondrian

Red, yellow and blue, divided by crisp black lines. The work of Piet Mondrian and De Stijl is more than a century old, yet it still looks thoroughly modern. A cheerful splash of colour among your books or on a desk.

Delft Blue and ceramic plates

The classic blue-and-white look of Delft Blue on a lightweight metal plate. You'll also find a larger ceramic wall plate here, and many more in our collection of Delft Blue wall plates.

Different sizes, plenty of ways to display them

The 16 cm plates are small enough for a windowsill or bookshelf and slip easily into a suitcase. The 26 cm plates make more of a statement and work well as a focal point on a mantelpiece or sideboard. A few ideas:

  • ✓On a plate stand: stand a plate upright on the mantelpiece, a cabinet or a sideboard.
  • ✓On the wall: with a plate hanger, a few plates become your own small gallery wall.
  • ✓As a series: Marrel's four coloured tulip plates make a cheerful set together.
  • ✓In a display cabinet: pair a plate with Delft Blue pieces or other Dutch keepsakes.

An art gift that survives the journey

A decorative plate is an affordable gift with a story behind it. Because the metal plates are light and hard to break, they're also a practical choice when you want to bring home a typical Dutch souvenir or have one delivered.

  • ✓For art lovers: a lasting reminder of a visit to the Rijksmuseum or the Mauritshuis.
  • ✓For Dutch expats: a piece of Dutch culture for the home, far from the Netherlands.
  • ✓For travellers: flat and light, so easy to fit in your hand luggage or suitcase.
  • ✓For businesses: a cultural corporate gift for international guests and partners.
