Shot glasses & Hip Flasks

In Dutch, a borrel is two things at once: the small glass of jenever and the convivial get-together around it. Both deserve a proper glass. Here you will find Dutch shot glasses and hip flasks decorated with Delft Blue windmills and tulips, the Amsterdam coat of arms, the Rotterdam skyline or a masterpiece by Van Gogh or Vermeer. Looking for a gift? Choose a drinks set or a little clog holding a shot glass, some complete with genuine Dutch jenever. From just a few euros, it is a typically Dutch souvenir for raising a glass to the Netherlands.

Dutch shot glasses: a souvenir to raise a toast with

A shot glass may be small, but it carries a lot of meaning. It turns up at Dutch birthday parties, at the close of a good deal and at the moment someone stands up to propose a toast. Because it is such a natural part of Dutch gezelligheid, a Dutch shot glass is a souvenir that actually gets used. Display it in your cabinet, or pour your first jenever into it the moment you get home.

De Holland Winkel has been selling Dutch souvenirs since 2002. In this category we have gathered all our shot glasses, hip flasks and drinks sets in one place, so you can easily choose something for yourself or as a gift.

Which shot glasses and hip flasks can you choose from?

Delft Blue shot glasses

The classic Dutch souvenir: shot glasses in Delft Blue featuring windmills, tulips, flowers, birds and traditional Dutch landscapes, including a Volendam harbour scene. Also available as gift sets.

Amsterdam shot glasses

Featuring the city's coat of arms with its three St Andrew's crosses, crooked canal houses or a bicycle. Choose a single glass or a set of two in red, white and blue or black and gold.

Rotterdam shot glasses

For anyone with a soft spot for the port city: shot glasses with the Rotterdam skyline, vintage city designs in red, blue or pink, and bold glasses with a black metal finish.

Van Gogh and Vermeer

Dutch Masters on a shot glass: The Starry Night, Sunflowers and Almond Blossom by Vincent van Gogh, or Girl with a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer. A lovely museum souvenir for art lovers.

Hip flasks

A hip flask is curved to follow the shape of your body, so it slips easily into an inside pocket. Our hip flasks feature Amsterdam designs, such as a red bicycle, the canal houses or the city's founding year, 1275.

Drinks sets and clogs

Ready to give: a Delft Blue or orange clog with a shot glass, a tulip drinks set, or wooden clogs with a shot glass and Dutch jenever. Ideal for birthdays, King's Day or as a thank-you.

The Dutch borrel: jenever, bowing and a "head butt"

The shot glass is inseparable from jenever, the juniper spirit that originated in the Low Countries and is the ancestor of English gin. In the seventeenth century the jenever trade grew into a thriving industry, and the city of Schiedam became famous for its distilleries. Jenever comes with its own etiquette, too. The glass is traditionally filled to the brim, and you take the first sip by bending forward over the table, without lifting the glass. Pair your jenever with a small beer and you have a kopstootje, which translates as "little head butt".

Worth knowing: the difference between jonge (young) and oude (old) jenever has nothing to do with age. It refers to the recipe. Oude jenever follows the older, malt-rich method and has a fuller flavour, while jonge jenever is lighter and crisper. Whatever you pour, a typically Dutch shot glass turns it into a genuinely Dutch moment.

  • ✓For collectors: shot glasses are small, affordable and there is always a new design to add to your collection.
  • ✓For Dutch expats: raise a toast to home with a Delft Blue shot glass, wherever in the world you live.
  • ✓For visitors: a light, compact souvenir that fits easily in your suitcase.
  • ✓For businesses: a drinks set makes an original corporate gift for international guests and partners.
