Van Gogh Sunflowers souvenirs: a masterpiece you can use
In the summer of 1888, Vincent van Gogh was living in Arles in the south of France. He was expecting his friend and fellow painter Paul Gauguin to come and stay, and wanted to brighten up his room in the Yellow House with a series of paintings of sunflowers in a vase. It became his most celebrated subject. Van Gogh painted the flowers at every stage of life: blazing in full bloom, but also wilting and going to seed. With thick brushstrokes and dozens of shades of yellow, he showed just how much colour a single colour can hold.
Several versions of the series survive today, in museums in Amsterdam, London, Munich, Philadelphia and Tokyo, among others. For many visitors, the version at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam is the highlight of their trip. Little wonder the Sunflowers are such a popular souvenir.
