Van Gogh's Starry Night: a night sky for every day

In June 1889, Vincent van Gogh was staying at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, in the south of France. From his bedroom window he looked out over the hills, and just before sunrise he saw the morning star shining brightly above the landscape. That view became the basis for The Starry Night. The little village with its pointed church spire was not visible from his window; he added it himself, partly from memory and partly from imagination. Many people feel the spire looks more like a Dutch church than a Provençal one.

Van Gogh himself was not particularly pleased with it, yet today The Starry Night is one of the most recognisable works of art ever made. The thick, swirling brushstrokes, the deep blue and the warm yellow of the stars make the painting instantly recognisable, even far from the museum wall. That is exactly why it works so well on souvenirs: whether it is a mug, a scarf or an umbrella, everyone can see straight away that it is Van Gogh.
