Van Gogh Irises souvenirs: a masterpiece to enjoy every day
In May 1889, Vincent van Gogh admitted himself to the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Within his first week, he set up his easel in the asylum garden and painted a bed of irises in full bloom. He felt that painting helped keep his illness at bay, and it shows: the canvas is calm, bright and full of life. The bold outlines and flat areas of colour reveal his love of Japanese woodblock prints. Among all the blue stands one white iris, a detail almost everyone notices straight away.
His brother Theo submitted the painting to the Salon des Indépendants in Paris that same year. Almost a century later, in 1987, Irises sold at auction for what was then a world record. Today it hangs in the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. In Amsterdam, the Van Gogh Museum is home to a later version: a still life of irises in a vase against a yellow background, painted in 1890.
