Van Gogh's Almond Blossom: a painting given as a birth gift
On 31 January 1890, Vincent Willem van Gogh was born in Paris, the son of Vincent's brother Theo and his wife Jo. The baby was named after his uncle. Vincent was staying at an asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence at the time, and decided to give the young family a painting: large branches of a flowering almond tree against a deep blue sky. In the south of France, the almond is among the first trees to blossom, often as early as February. He could hardly have chosen a more fitting symbol for a new life.
Theo and Jo hung the painting above the piano in their living room. Their son would later become the driving force behind the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, where Van Gogh's Almond Blossom still belongs to the collection today. The original draws visitors from all over the world, and the motif now appears on almost everything, from posters and wallpaper to tableware and fashion.
Why did Van Gogh paint so many blossoms?
For Van Gogh, blossom was more than a pretty subject. When he arrived in Arles in the spring of 1888, he painted a whole series of flowering orchards within a few weeks, with peach, plum and apricot trees in bloom. In Almond Blossom you can also clearly see the influence of the Japanese woodblock prints he collected: the strong outlines, the flat blue background and the branches seen up close and slightly from below. The result is a blossom painting full of calm and optimism, which is exactly why it works so well on things you use every day.
