Rembrandt and The Night Watch: a masterpiece to take home

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606–1669) was born in Leiden and spent most of his working life in Amsterdam. He is regarded as the greatest painter of the Dutch Golden Age, famed for his dramatic use of light and shadow (chiaroscuro) and for portraits full of character. His best-known work is The Night Watch of 1642, the centrepiece of the Rijksmuseum. Anyone who has stood in front of it will remember the moment: a company of militiamen who seem to march straight out of the canvas, with drums, pikes and a little girl caught in golden light.

De Holland Winkel has been selling Dutch souvenirs since 2002. In this category you will find our premium museum souvenirs featuring Rembrandt's work: products we chose because they are well made and built to last. Not throwaway trinkets, but gifts that will be used and treasured.

Facts about The Night Watch

It is not a night scene at all

The official title is Militia Company of District II under the Command of Captain Frans Banninck Cocq. The name Night Watch came much later, when the varnish had darkened so much that the scene looked like it took place at night. In fact, it is set in daylight.

How big is The Night Watch?

The canvas measures roughly 3.8 by 4.5 metres. It was originally even larger: in 1715 it was trimmed on all sides so that it would fit in Amsterdam's town hall on Dam Square.

Where is Rembrandt in The Night Watch?

Many experts believe Rembrandt painted himself into the crowd: behind the militiamen, partly hidden by the standard-bearer, you can just make out an eye and a beret attributed to the painter. Look at the bottom right, too, where a small dog barks at the drummer.

Where can you see The Night Watch in Amsterdam?

In the Gallery of Honour at the Rijksmuseum. The painting is owned by the City of Amsterdam and is on long-term loan to the museum. Since 2019 it has been studied and restored as part of Operation Night Watch, largely in full view of visitors.

What is The Night Watch worth?

There is no price tag: the painting is not for sale and is widely considered priceless. Fortunately, you can take The Night Watch home with you after all, in souvenir form.

Who painted The Night Watch?

Rembrandt van Rijn, commissioned by Amsterdam's Kloveniers militia company. He completed the work in 1642, the same year his wife Saskia died.
