Each one is carefully printed and made to last, as a treat for yourself or a gift for anyone who loves art and flowers.
Jan Davidsz. de Heem: still lifes with flowers to bring home
Jan Davidsz. de Heem (1606–1684) was born in Utrecht and became one of the most successful painters of the seventeenth century. He worked in Leiden, Antwerp and Utrecht and made his name with lavish banquet pieces and still lifes with flowers. Collectors were eager to buy his paintings during his lifetime, and De Heem grew wealthy from their sale. Today he is still regarded as a central figure in Dutch still life painting.
What makes his work so special is the detail. In a single vase, De Heem would combine flowers that never bloom at the same time: tulips, peonies, irises and ears of wheat, with a butterfly, a caterpillar or a tiny snail tucked in between. The result is a feast for the eyes with a deeper meaning: the beauty of flowers is fleeting. It is exactly these rich, colourful images that you will find on our souvenirs.
The Still Life with Flowers in a Glass Vase
Most products in this category show the Still Life with Flowers in a Glass Vase from the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Set against a dark background, the bouquet almost seems to step out of the canvas. You may also know the painting as De Heem’s ‘Vase of Flowers’. It is one of the finest examples of the Dutch flower still life and makes for elegant, colourful gifts.
