The stories behind the paintings
Van Gogh's Sunflowers may well be the most famous flower painting in the world. In 1888 and 1889, in Arles in the south of France, Vincent painted several versions of a vase of sunflowers. One of them hangs in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. Together with Almond Blossom, which he painted to celebrate the birth of his nephew, and his Irises, they are among his best-loved flower paintings.
Girl with a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer is often called the Mona Lisa of the North. You'll find her in the Mauritshuis in The Hague, while The Milkmaid hangs in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, alongside Rembrandt's Night Watch.
Jan Davidsz. de Heem (1606–1684) was one of the great painters of floral still lifes. His work is a celebration of detail: flowers that would never bloom at the same time in real life, gathered in a single vase, with butterflies, snails and drops of dew. That wealth of colour makes his paintings ideal for scarves and napkins.

Many of our museum souvenirs are also sold in the shops of Dutch museums such as the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum. They are the same quality products, with faithful reproductions of the original artworks. Holland Winkel is not itself an official museum shop.
