Hopjes
A cup of coffee accidentally left on the stove overnight: that is how the story of Haagse Hopjes began. This old Dutch coffee sweet is still a favourite with young and old alike. Here you'll find hopjes in cheerful gift bags, pretty tins decorated with Van Gogh flowers or Delft Blue birds, in a little wooden clog or in a Delft Blue dish. An affordable and typically Dutch gift for anyone who loves coffee, nostalgia or the Netherlands.
Buy Haagse Hopjes: Baron Hop's famous coffee sweet
Baron Hendrik Hop was very fond of coffee. So fond, the story goes, that one evening he left his cup of coffee with sugar and cream on the warm stove. By the next morning it had turned into a hard, sweet caramel, and the baron loved it. When his doctor later told him to give up coffee, he asked his neighbour, the baker Theodorus van Haaren, to make those "chunks of coffee" for him. Soon all of The Hague was talking about Baron Hop's chunks, and in 1880 they were given the name Haagsche Hopjes.
Well over a century later, the hopje is still a classic from grandma's sweet tin. You don't chew a hopje; you let it melt slowly, so you taste the full flavour of coffee and caramel. De Holland Winkel has been selling Dutch treats and souvenirs since 2002. In this category you'll find all our hopjes in one place, from a single bag to a complete gift set.
