Dutch bandanas and farmer's scarves: a classic piece of Holland

Not so long ago, almost every Dutch farmer, fisherman and labourer carried one: a cotton handkerchief in red or blue with an elegant teardrop motif. The boerenzakdoek kept off sweat, dust and the cold, and was just as easily knotted around the neck as tucked into a trouser pocket. The paisley pattern itself has travelled a long way. It originated in Persia and India and, through the European textile trade, found its way to the Dutch countryside.

Today the Dutch bandana is above all a festive and nostalgic accessory. You'll spot it on brass bands, at carnival in the south of the Netherlands, at folk dance performances and at traditional farmers' weddings. De Holland Winkel has been selling Dutch souvenirs since 2002, and in this category we've brought together our traditional farmer's scarves and Holland scarves.

Which scarves can you find here?

Traditional Dutch bandanas

The genuine square farmer's handkerchief with a classic paisley print. Tie it around your neck, wear it as a bandana or simply tuck it into your breast pocket. A timeless piece of Dutch traditional dress.

Farmer's scarf with clog scarf holder

A farmer's scarf you don't need to knot: just slide the ends through a tiny wooden clog, known in Dutch as a dasklomp. Available with a yellow or blue clog and different scarf patterns. It doesn't get much more Dutch than this.

Orange Holland scarves

For supporting the Dutch national team, celebrating King's Day or cheering at a sporting event abroad. Choose an orange Holland scarf or a fan scarf in orange and black, and show everyone who you're rooting for.

Colours and patterns

Go for the classic red paisley, a traditional blue, a festive orange or a version with a rose pattern. Collect a few colours to match every outfit or occasion.

How to wear a Dutch bandana

The classic way is simple. Fold the handkerchief diagonally into a triangle, drape it around your neck with the point at the front and tie the ends at the back or to one side. With a clog scarf holder it's even quicker: pull both ends through the little clog and slide it up until the scarf sits nicely. Wear it with a traditional farmer's smock, a checked shirt or simply with jeans for a playful Dutch touch.

  • ✓For carnival and themed parties: combine a farmer's scarf with wooden clogs and a Dutch costume for the complete look.
  • ✓For fans: an orange scarf is a must for every European Championship, World Cup and King's Day.
  • ✓For Dutch expats: a recognisable piece of home to wear on national holidays or at a Dutch get-together abroad.
  • ✓For tourists: a light, wearable souvenir that fits easily in your suitcase.

Frequently asked questions about Dutch farmer's scarves

What is a clog scarf holder (dasklomp)? +

A dasklomp is a miniature wooden clog used as a scarf ring. You pull the ends of your farmer's scarf through it so the scarf stays in place without a knot. It's a typically Dutch accessory, often worn at festivals, folk performances and with traditional costume.

What's the difference between a Dutch bandana and a farmer's scarf? +

They're closely related. The Dutch bandana, or farmer's handkerchief, is the traditional square cloth with a paisley print that you can wear around your neck or keep in your pocket. A farmer's scarf usually refers to the same cloth worn as a neckerchief, often with a clog scarf holder. You'll find the exact dimensions on each product page.
