In the seventeenth century, ships of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) brought precious Chinese porcelain to the Netherlands. Its blue and white designs were hugely fashionable, but far too expensive for most people. The potters of Delft saw their chance: they covered their earthenware in a white tin glaze and painted it with cobalt blue. Delft Blue was born. Wealthy households didn't use their finest plates for dinner; they displayed them in cabinets, on the mantelpiece or on the wall. A decorative plate was a status symbol, and in many Dutch homes it still is.
