Stepped, neck or bell gable?
Stroll along the Amsterdam canals and you can often tell how old a house is just by looking at its gable. Because the houses are narrow and deep and their staircases steep, many have a hoisting beam at the top, used to lift goods and furniture in through the windows. Our canal houses show the best-known gable styles:

- ✓Neck gable: a tall, narrow top with decorative scrolls on each side, popular from the mid-seventeenth century.
