Breakfast
Having
a breakfast never was a common habit . Usually people had two meals a day, at
noon and in the afternoon. Only they who had a physically heavy job took something
for breakfast.
Around 1600 the breakfast became a habit in Holland, usually some ryebread
with butter and cheese. Fish for breakfast was a custom, specially smelt. In
the country and on board the ships people ate porridge. Drinking beer during
breakfast was normal.
At the beginning of the twentieth century people in general ate bread, though
porridge was also custom. After 1930 eating porridge became more populair. It
was considered very healthy and nourishing and the rise of easy made porridges
like oatmeal porridge and brinta intensified this trend.
Owing to some investigators 20 till 30 percent of the younger people skip
their breakfast, they take several bites during the day. But the majority of
the Dutch still have a traditional breakfast of bread with cheese, sweets or
meat.
